The V.I. Health Department has released its 2024 Epidemiology Division Annual Report, offering a comprehensive analysis of reportable disease trends in the territory.

This report serves as a vital resource for shaping data-driven health policies and strengthening public health interventions, the department said in a press release announcing its release on Wednesday.

“The 2024 Annual Report reflects the health challenges we faced and provides a road map for enhancing public health strategies in the year ahead,” said Dr. Esther Ellis, Territorial Epidemiologist and director of the department’s Epidemiology Division.

The report is the result of collaborative efforts across multiple agencies, health care providers, and community partners, said Ellis in a message introducing the document. “Their contributions to timely reporting, data accuracy, and response coordination are invaluable, and I extend my gratitude to all stakeholders who have played a role in this essential work,” she said.

Ellis emphasized the critical role of disease surveillance in safeguarding community health.

Throughout 2024, the territory confronted both persistent and emerging health threats, including COVID-19, influenza, and a dengue outbreak, the release stated. “The report underscores the need for continued vigilance and collaboration among agencies, health care providers, and community partners to bolster disease prevention and response efforts,” it said.

Key highlights from the 15-page report include:

— The division’s response to the dengue outbreak, including expanded mosquito prevention efforts.

— The launch of a public data dashboard to enhance transparency and access to health information.

— The establishment of a food complaint hotline to improve foodborne illness tracking.

— Surveillance data on disease trends in the USVI and the division’s scientific publications for 2024.

It also features a tribute to 2024 Employee of the Year, epidemiologist Cosme Harrison, “a dedicated public health professional” with eight years of experience in the Epidemiology Division. He has also served his country for over 20 years as a member of the V.I. Army National Guard.

Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion commended the Epidemiology Division’s contributions and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to advancing public health.

“Health is the foundation of a strong and thriving community, and protecting it is a shared responsibility,” said Encarnacion. “This report highlights the exceptional work of the Epidemiology Division and our progress in strengthening public health infrastructure.”
