Nine burglaries were reported on St. Croix in a single day as police investigate a recent increase in business break-ins, residential burglaries and home invasion robberies, the V.I. Police Department said Wednesday.
Most of the nine burglaries occurred in the La Grande Princess area, while one was reported in Frederiksted, according to a VIPD press release. In the business break-ins, suspects reportedly forced their way inside by breaking glass doors and windows.
Police said the suspects appear to be young people who wear dark clothing, hoodies, ski masks and other face coverings to conceal their identities.
During the home invasions, suspects reportedly demanded money and valuables before fleeing with personal property, according to the release. Police said some victims were restrained and had their phones and other electronic devices stolen to delay calls for help.
No life-threatening injuries have been reported, the release stated.
VIPD said it has increased patrols in affected communities and is continuing to investigate the incidents.
Police urged businesses to maintain surveillance cameras and working alarm systems and to immediately report suspicious people or vehicles. Residents were advised to secure doors and windows, avoid opening doors for unknown people and call 911 from a safe location if someone attempts to enter their home.
