Aerial Silks Workshop Coming to St. Croix Nov. 22-24

Aerial Silks Workshop

Professional aerialist Ana Prada will return to the Virgin Islands to teach a series of aerial silks intensives on St. Croix Nov. 22, 23 and 24. A series of six separate workshops will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A discounted price of $160 is available for those who register for all six classes and $120 is the cost for four classes.

Drop ins are welcome at $35 per two-hour class. The workshop weekend will take place at Villa Larimar, No. 4 Betsey’s Jewel, Kingshill, on the Northshore of St. Croix (about 20 minutes from downtown Christiansted).

The workshop is designed for the person who has always wanted to try aerial silks and also for those who have some experience. Introducing the basic technique of aerial silks, beginner students will learn climbs and basic fabric vocabularies, such as foot locks, figures and hip keys. The focus will be on proper alignment and breath, and on laying the foundation for sustainable, injury-free aerial practice.

For those with some experience in the silks, the class will use breath and connection as a foundation. While building vocabulary and technique, students will learn small phrases and connecting movements allowing them to feel the dance in the air.

About the instructor: Ana Prada was born and raised in Colombia. An aerial dancer and yoga practitioner since 1998, she also studied ballet and contemporary dance in New York City, where she started to explore aerial apparatuses like dance trapeze and rope. She then moved to Montreal, where she specialized in aerial silks and hoop.

Prada has worked with companies like Cirque du Soleil; “El despertar de la Serpiente” for the Expo 2008 in Spain; the show ‘Ulalena (Maui, Hawaii) as an acrobat, dancer, and aerial coach; La Esquina Desplaza with Triknia contemporary dance company in Colombia; and many other shows and projects.

She is the co-founder of the Samadhi Aerial Dance Company in Hawaii, where she teaches workshops regularly and where Vayu Aereal Yoga was developed.

In her work, Prada is always interested in finding a deeper balance and an organic connection — aerial roots — to be grounded wherever she goes. Visit www.ana-prada.com for more information.
