Boyson Inc. Adds Commander, 225-Foot Cargo Barge, to Fleet

Enighed Pond Marine Facility was the place to be on Love City on Wednesday morning, January 23, when Boyson Inc. docked its brand new Commander cargo barge.

Arriving from its home port of Greece, where it was built in 1998, the 225-foot Commander consists of three floors and is capable of transporting 110 vehicles.

Despite the impressive capacity for cars, the barge  will not be used to transport passengers between St. Thomas and St. John, according to a representative of Boyson’s cargo subsidy, Breeze Shipping.

“It was a car ferry in Greece,” said Joanna Boynes. “But we’re going to use it to transport cargo between St. Thomas, St. Croix, Tortola, St. Maarten and Anguilla. It will cover all the islands as our cargo barge.”

The Commander cleared U.S. Customs shortly after docking at Enighed on January 23 and was on its way east the next day.
