The Friends of Virgin Islands National Park will hold a community tree giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 27. Planting native trees is an important aspect of hurricane recovery because it restores the natural ecosystem so it will be better at withstanding future storms. Come on by Pickles in Coral Bay or the National Park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay, St. John, and pick out a tree to plant and grow.
The Friends have over 250 native trees to give away as well as some edibles like avocado, lemongrass and key lime. The 10 species of native trees include soursop, tyre palm, bay rum, frangipani and sea grape. Eleanor Gibney, Elmo Rabsatt and Gail Karlsson get special thanks for their assistance in growing these trees.
The giveaway is possible thanks to an Island Spirit Fund and the support of the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.
