My Brother’s Workshop is responding to urgent COVID-19 needs with its “Spread Hope and Love (not COVID-19)” fundraising campaign, which provides cloth masks to those in need.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5 – in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1st #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

At a time when all people are experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings people of all races, faiths and political views together across the globe. It’s a day for everyone around the world to stand together and give back in all ways, no matter who or where we are.

The Center for Disease Control recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. As we begin to look forward to reopening the Virgin Islands, many of our community members will now be able to leave their homes to go shopping, work, etc.

Unfortunately, community members do not have access to a mask. My Brother’s Workshop has partnered with Cancer Support VI (CSVI) to Spread Hope & Love to the vulnerable population of the Virgin Islands for #GivingTuesdayNow by providing masks to members of the community who would otherwise not have access to one.

MBW trainees and staff members have made the masks and are seeking donors to “sponsor a mask” for community members in need. Because many V.I. citizens don’t have access to a mask to protect themselves and others, they need help. A donation of $20 could provide one individual a mask to wear along with a Cancer Support VI LOVE Button: $50 for four masks and buttons, $100 for 10 masks and buttons, and $500 for 60 masks and buttons.

MBW and Cancer Support VI will work with community partners and volunteer distributors to get these masks into the hands of our vulnerable community members in need.

Established on St. Thomas in 2011, XO Energy (XO Energy Worldwide LLLP) is a partnership that provides software and management consulting services to its affiliated U.S. electricity trading companies. It has pledged to match all donations made to the “Spread Hope and Love (Not COVID-19) campaign, April 28 through May 5 (up to $5,000). That means that with everyone’s help, MBW could distribute 1,000 masks.
