VIFS, DOP Announce St. Thomas- St. John Firefighter/EMT Testing Dates

In partnership with V.I. Fire Service Director Daryl George, V.I. Personnel Director Cindy L. Richardson is announcing upcoming testing dates for the rank of Firefighter/EMT in the St. Thomas-St. John District only. All interested candidates must sign-up and submit a completed application package online at by 11:59 p.m., Friday, Jan. 21. Testing dates are tentatively scheduled for Feb. 25-28.

The online preparation manual and practice tests that simulate the full-length version of the exam are now available for a minimal fee.

To qualify, a candidate must: have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate from an accredited institution; possess or must be able to qualify for a motor vehicle operator’s license; be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be 18 years of age or older at time of hire; successfully complete the national registry EMT certification and Firefighter-I training upon completion of new recruit training within 18 months of employment; have no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven (7) years; and be able to meet the department’s physical standards.

Junior Firefighters who have successfully completed the established fire curriculum (approved by DOP and VIFS) and have a written verification or a certificate from VIFS officials are eligible to sit for the examination.

The following candidates will be exempt from sitting for the written examination, but they are required to meet all other established criteria for qualification:

  • Persons holding a degree in any field of study (associates and above) from an accredited institution.
  • All honorably discharged veterans from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces (DD214).
