VITFF Bulletin: Conhoff, Garcia and Smith Set Virgin Islands Records

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation updates the progress of V.I. athletes on both the high school and college level.

Congratulations to VI National Team member Eduardo Garcia who competed in the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler race in Washington, D.C. on April 3. He ran the 10-Mile Road Race in a new VI National record of 49 minutes and 14 seconds, placing 14th overall.

Garcia is working on qualifying for the NACAC Senior Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, from Aug. 19-21 and the Outdoor World Athletic Championships. The championships will be held in Oregon from July 15-24.

Congratulations to St. Croix Track Club athlete Michelle Smith, a high school sophomore at Montverde Academy, who competed at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., on April 1. Smith won her heat in the 800m, breaking her own VI Junior record with a new time of 2:10.93, which was also bettered by her own Montverde Academy school record. Her latest performance in the 800m has ranked her 9th in the United States for all high school athletes.

Smith was also part of the 4 * 100m relay team that set a new Montverde School record with a time of 46.75.

She will compete next in the IMG Academy Invitational in Bradenton, Fla., on April 9. After that she will travel to Kingston, Jamaica, to represent the Virgin Islands in the 49th CARIFTA Games, which will be held from April 16-18.

Congratulations to Jolly Rogers Track Club and Ursinus College Junior Rachel Conhoff, who started off her outdoor season with a new Virgin Islands 3,000m Steeplechase record at the Mulhenberg Invitational in Allentown, Penn., on April 2. Conhoff finished 1st in the 3000m Steeple in a V.I. record time of 11:28.54. Her time ranks her in the top 2 in Central America and the Caribbean and top 8 for NACAC.

Conhoff’s next track meet will be a home meet for her: the Ursinus Outdoor Invitational on April 9.

St. Croix Track Club athlete Mikaela Smith, a senior at Austin Peay State University, Tenn., continued her outdoor season at the 2022 Hilltopper Relays in Bowling Green, Ky., on April 2. She competed in the 800m where she placed 1st overall with a time of 2:15.67.

Smith’s next competition will be at the OVC Trio in Murray, Ky.

Virgin Islands National Team member Maia Campbell competed in the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, on April 2. She competed in the shot put and finished in first place with a throw of 15.79m.

Campbell is working on qualifying for the NACAC Senior Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, from Aug. 19-21, and the Outdoor World Athletic Championships. The championships will be held in Oregon from July 15-24.

National VI Team member Eddie Lovett opened up his outdoor track season at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. Lovett came in 2nd in the 110m hurdles Olympic Dev section in a time of 14.18.

He is working on qualifying for the NACAC Senior Championships in Nassau, Bahamas, from Aug. 19-21, and the Outdoor World Athletic Championships. The championships will be held in Oregon from July 15-24.

VI National Team member Yashira Rhymer-Stuart competed at the WKU Hilltopper Relays 2022 at Bowling Green, Ky., on April 2. Rhymer-Stuart competed in the high jump where she finished 7th with a jump of 1.60m.

Nicola Peters, a sophomore at Sparkman High School, competed in the Bob Jones Invitational 2022 in Madison, Ala., on April 2. Peters ran the 200m in a personal record of 25.83 finishing 3rd overall. She also competed in the 100m, placing 4th with a time of 13.03.
