ACC Announces New Flea Market Location at Gifft Hill School

ACC’s annual fall fundraiser, the “No Fleas, Please” flea market, will be on Saturday, October 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Gifft Hill School’s Upper Campus.

The location is new this year. Instead of being at the Winston Wells ball field in Cruz Bay — as has been the custom for the past 10 or more years — this year the market will be at GHS.

Because the ball field was recently reseeded through the strenuous efforts of a crew of volunteers, ACC doesn’t wish to bring trucks, cars, and other equipment onto the field that might spoil the newly completed landscaping job.

Instead, ACC volunteers, members and staff will host the flea market this year on the grounds of the GHS Upper Campus on Gifft Hill Road.

ACC Board of Directors President Lucy Banks worked with GHS Counselor Megan Emanuelson for use of the school grounds for the flea market. While Emanuelson offered the use of any part of the school grounds Banks declined use of the school’s beautiful soccer field for the same reason that the humane organization has moved away from the Cruz Bay ball field.

“What we really want to accomplish here, besides collecting money for the animals, is to leave the school grounds exactly as we found them; as if we had never been there,” said Banks.

The plan is to host the flea market at the very entrance to the school. The entry driveway will be set up with tables in the center of the driveway entrance circle. Further displays of merchandise will be on the grassy knoll leading to the front of the school.

As a result, the school’s landscaped fields will not be disturbed, visitors and clients of the flea market will be able to easily spot the location of the sale from the road and parking alongside the road will be convenient.

ACC is still collecting donations for sale at the flea market. The large collection of books gathered has already been sold.

Two mini-flea markets have also been planned for selling clothing and household goods. The first sale, a clothing-only sale, was on Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21, at The Marketplace. The housewares sale will be on Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the second floor of The Marketplace.

Call the ACC shelter at 774-1625, to arrange for pickup of furniture or other large items to be donated. Small items can be brought to the shelter on the library road in Cruz Bay.

The ACC shelter serves the entire St. John community with kennels for homeless and abused dogs, cat cages and free-roaming space indoors for as many homeless cats and kittens as the shelter can house, and also with feeding stations throughout the island for homeless cats and kittens who otherwise might starve. Every dollar and every penny earned at the flea market goes directly to the care, feeding, and medication of our island’s needy companion animals.

Please join the ACC at the GHS Upper Campus on Saturday, October 19, to find small treasures and to help fund the ACC’s efforts.

As former ACC Board member Bill Dove always said, it’s all “for the animals.”
