As the Thanksgiving and holiday season approaches, the Fountain family of St. Thomas finds themselves navigating profound grief. Yet, amidst the sorrow of losing their beloved Adaliah Fountain, a 19-year-old honor student and devout Christian, they are choosing gratitude for the precious years they were blessed to share with her. Adaliah, described as a jewel of her family, touched countless lives with her kindness, faith, and generosity. Even in death, her impact continues to shine through the five lives she saved as an organ donor, exemplifying her loving spirit.

A Jewel of the Family

Adaliah, who graduated with high honors from the prestigious Charlotte Amalie High School earlier this year, was a source of immense pride for her family. Her grandmother, Daphne Fountain, shared that Adaliah was a granddaughter like no other—a young woman who never gave her a moment of worry. “She was truly the jewel of our family,” Daphne remarked. “Her kind spirit made her special. She brought light and love wherever she went.”

Her sister, Adajah, reflected on the profound bond they shared. “Adaliah had the kindest heart,” she said. “It’s comforting to know that her heart now beats in the body of an 11-year-old elementary school student who has been given a second chance at life because of her sacrifice.”

Her cousin, Mike, recounted the heartbreaking moments that followed her passing. Mike and his mom, Avanelle Fontain (Adaliah’s aunt), met her at the Kendall Regional Hospital when she was airlifted from St. Thomas to Miami. With the family’s support, he made the brave and selfless decision to make her an organ donor. “My little cousin was a hero,” Mike said. He described the emotional “honor walk” that took place as she was moved to the operating room for organ donation. What seemed like almost 100 medical staff and family members lined the hallways, weeping for her loss and giving gratitude for her gift of life to others. “It was heartbreaking,” Mike shared, “but it showed who she was—a selfless person in life, and her death is a testament to her giving nature.”  Recounting her love for the warm sun and the countless hours she spent strolling sandy beaches, he knows that now she is in heaven walking streets of gold.

A Life Rooted in Faith

Adaliah’s life was deeply grounded in her faith. A devout Christian, she could often be found reading her Bible and engaging with her church community. Her family lovingly described her as a “true church girl,” devoted to her spiritual growth and service to others. Adaliah’s faith guided her actions and was the foundation of her generous and compassionate nature.

During her time in Jacksonville, Adaliah was particularly active in her church, forming lasting relationships and setting an example of faithfulness for her peers. Her commitment to her beliefs inspired those around her and continues to serve as a testament to the strength of her spirit.

The Fountain family takes solace in their belief that Adaliah, their little church girl, is now in the arms of Jesus. “One day, we will all be together in heaven,” they said, finding comfort in their faith during this unimaginable time.

A Tragic Loss, A Lasting Legacy

Her mother, Adele Fountain, shared that it was a day like any other when tragedy struck. There was nothing out of the ordinary until the sudden onset of her illness, leaving the family in a state of shock. Overwhelmed with grief, Adaliah’s mother is clinging to her faith in Jesus as the family comes to terms with this devastating loss.  “Adaliah was a joy to have as a daughter. Whatever I asked her to do she did. She was a beautiful girl.”

Adaliah’s passing was the result of medical complications that led to an electrolyte imbalance, low sodium levels, and seizures. Despite swift medical attention, she was declared brain-dead at a Miami hospital. In the face of unimaginable loss, her family made the courageous decision to donate her organs, transforming their grief into hope for others.

Through her selflessness, Adaliah saved five lives. Her heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and other organs went to recipients within the South-East US. region, bringing new life to those in desperate need. The Fountain family hopes to eventually meet the recipients of Adaliah’s organs, finding comfort in the tangible ways her legacy lives on.

Gratitude Amid Grief

As they prepare for the holidays, the Fountain family reflects on their gratitude for the 19 beautiful years they had with Adaliah. While the season magnifies their loss, it also reminds them of the joy she brought into their lives. Her laughter, her kindness, and her unwavering faith are cherished memories that bring solace.

Grandmother Daphne shared how Adaliah’s memory continues to inspire her family to live with love and purpose. “Even as we grieve, we give thanks for the time we had with her,” she said. “She was a gift to us, and her legacy is a gift to the world.”

Raised by her grandparents since birth, it was their abiding faith in Christ that they instilled in their little bundle of joy.  Grandpa Fountain is particularly overcome with grief as he recounts the days he bounced her on his knee and how her smile lit up their home. He takes solace in knowing that she was reared in a God-fearing home and was taught the importance of hard work, integrity and kindness by him and his wife Daphne.

Honoring Her Memory

To give Adaliah the homegoing ceremony she deserves, the family has established a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $15,000. These funds will help transport her body back to St. Thomas and ensure she is laid to rest surrounded by the love she showed to others throughout her life.

The Fountain family is planning a “going home ceremony” to celebrate Adaliah’s life and faith. They are also exploring ways to continue her legacy, including sharing her story to highlight the importance of organ donation and inspiring others with her example of selflessness.

Adaliahs Enduring Light

Adaliah Fountain will forever be remembered as a young woman of extraordinary character, faith, and love. Her selflessness in life and in death has left an indelible mark on those who knew her and on the lives she saved. This Christmas season, the Fountain family honors her memory with gratitude and love, knowing that her spirit continues to shine brightly in the hearts of all she touched.

Adaliah’s light is eternal, illuminating the lives of those she saved and inspiring her family and community to carry forward her legacy of Christian faith and lovingkindness. Her Aunt Ava Fountain described Adaliah as “the most beautiful girl in the world,” and that’s how she will always be remembered.
