The gas tank that fell over at Christiansted’s Gallows Bay Port, causing the port to be closed for around four hours Monday, has been deemed safe, the Virgin Islands Port Authority said. The port reopened shortly before 4 p.m.
Although no fuel was spilled, the Port Authority, VI Fire and Emergency Services, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the incident, inspecting the tank closely. It was not clear how far the petroleum tank fell, only that the matter was taken seriously by emergency responders.
The fuel tank was being transported by Water Spirit Freight Services for delivery to Diageo when the accident happened, causing the port to be closed. Virgin Islands Port Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Rawlins said to expect delays while the tank was inspected.
Water Spirit Freight Services did not immediately reply to messages.
