The Artists Guild of St. Croix provides fellowship among artists, promotes exhibits and workshops, and mentors young artists in the community. The Guild has organized a mask-making workshop for the youth ages seven to ten years at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The partnership with CMCArts is a free community event with all materials provided by the Artists Guild. Parents of youngsters are encouraged to register at the CMCArts website or in person at the museum location on Strand St. in downtown Frederiksted. This fun activity is open to 20 youngsters.

Members of the board, President Matt Jarvis, Vice President Cathy Booth and Secretary Jean Bishop, will mentor and share their craft with the young attendees. According to Booth, the tagboard mask template form is the base for the young artists to embellish with tempera paint, markers, feathers, glitter, fabric, paper, and many found objects. Poster Board will be provided for artists to trace or cut their own templates with the use of scissors and glue in their supply kit.

In previous years, Artists Guild members shared their craft with the residents at the Lutheran Social Services Flambouyant Gardens Senior Housing in Estate Barren Spot and the residents at the Ginger Thomas Prince St. Residence for low-income adults with developmental disabilities, both on St. Croix.

According to the artists who facilitated the regular art workshops, it was an activity that benefitted both students and teachers.

In addition to the mask-making mentorship, the Guild will provide fellowship among its member artists with the annual Art Thursday Walk in Christiansted when it returns Nov. 17 with its regular schedule of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This year, the Artists Guild will present a “Pop-Up Artist Market” at 52 Company St., located at the former Top Hat Gallery. Guild members will show works varying from new works to previously shown artwork, cards, ornaments, and matted and framed work. The Artist Market will be open to the public at the Art Thursday Walk Nov. 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and also on Friday, Nov. 18, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Patrons will have the opportunity to see and purchase art for two days. The Guild recognizes that some folks are not comfortable driving at night, so there is the daytime Pop-Up Artist Market just for them and for those who desire to come back to Christiansted the next day, Friday. “It’s a ‘two-fer’ from the Artists Guild to the community,” they said.

Property owner of the former Top Hat Gallery Will Watson has generously rented his downstairs space to the Artists Guild for the two-day “Pop-Up Market.”
