Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. used his weekly press briefing to introduce his new nominee to lead the Department of Finance. The commissioner designee is a former staffer with the Office of Management and Budget.

The commissioner designee is a former senior analyst from the Office of Management and Budget. If the governor’s nomination of Kevin McCurdy is confirmed by the 35th Legislature, he will succeed former Finance Commissioner Bosede Bruce, who resigned in May.

“I know he is committed to this community,” the governor said, “I welcome him today and introduce him to you as our designee for the Commissioner of Finance.”

McCurdy took the opportunity of the press briefing to thank the staff at Finance for giving him a warm welcome Monday morning as he reported for his first day of duty. The department serves the local government and the public by providing financial services in a lawful and efficient manner. Finance also works to make sure local- and federally-funded operations are conducted as required by their respective guidelines.

Bryan also announced an agreement reached through the Department of Tourism with St. Thomas’ Aliyah Boston to serve as the territory’s new brand ambassador. Boston recently began her professional sports career with the Women’s National Basketball Association after wrapping up a stellar collegiate basketball career. During her years of playing for the University of South Carolina, Boston won several national titles, including the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year.

The governor called Boston “Our one-and-only superstar.” In her role as brand ambassador, Boston will promote the territory’s image and interact with consumers who want to enjoy the best of what the Virgin Islands has to offer.

There was no mention of what kind of compensation Boston will receive for her promotional side job.
