It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doris Elaine Jackson Brodhurst on Feb. 23.

Doris Elaine Jackson Brodhurst led a remarkable life, characterized by her dedication to education, community service, and her passion for learning and helping others. Born in Baltimore, Md., on Aug. 3, 1944, she transitioned into eternity on Feb. 23.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Julius Benton Jackson and Jesse Lee Jackson; and seven of her eight siblings.

She pursued her education diligently, obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree from Coppin State College and Master’s Degree from Morgan State College.  While vacationing on the island of St. Croix in the late 60’s, Doris fell in love with its beauty and culture and decided to make it her home.  She quickly accepted a grade school teaching position which led to an amazing 35-year career as an educator, retiring in 2005 as assistant principal of John H. Woodson Middle School.

Doris was a faithful member St. Luke AME Church where she served in various capacities. She was initiated into the St. Croix Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in the inaugural Line of 1976 where she held several positions, including chapter president. A huge advocate for women’s rights, Doris was also a long-time member of the St. Croix Women’s Coalition.  While of St. Croix, she met and married the late Herbert Brodhurst.

After retiring, Doris returned to Maryland and continued her active involvement in community service.  She joined Mount Pleasant African Methodist Episcopal Church in Owings Mills, Md., where she continued her Christian service.

She also joined the Baltimore County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where she engaged in various community-based activities.  Additionally, she became a charter member of Dorie Miller VFW Auxiliary No. 5367, demonstrating her commitment to supporting homeless veterans and participating in initiatives for veteran patients at the Loch Raven VA Medical Center.  Doris’ dedication extended to Epsilon Epsilon Chapter of Eta Phi Beta Sorority where she served in leadership roles, embodying the organization’s motto of service to others.

Outside of her professional and community endeavors, she enjoyed various hobbies such as traveling, reading, completing puzzles and engaging in intellectual discussions.  She cherished historical books, particularly those with the authors’ autographs, showcasing her appreciation for knowledge and literature.

Above all, Doris was known for her kindness, generosity and unwavering friendship.  Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched and the lasting impact she made on her community and beyond.

Doris leaves to cherish her loving memory a devoted niece, Charisse Taylor; nephew, Ronald Hill (Brandi); great nephew, Brian Guy; sister, Nancy Smith; and numerous other nieces, nephews and friends.

She is also survived by special friends: Soros Corine King and Dr. Joyce Thomas, Willie King and Denise Collins.

Funeral services for Mrs. Doris E. Jackson Brodhurst will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, at Mount Pleasant AME Church, 235 Tollgate Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117
