Your own little hotel in a quiet slice of paradise, where locals and tourists soak up hospitality, blending steel-pan nights and soft ocean-wave days, where business and pleasure can’t help but intertwine like toes in the sand, like ice melting in some flamboyant drink — it’s a dream so powerful, so pervasive, it’s practically a tropical archetype.

What percentage of humans daydream about such a venture — from Robert Louis Stevenson to Hermon Wouk to the writers of White Lotus — we can’t say. But every once in a while, there’s a chance to break through fantasy’s gossamer and embrace the real-world role of Shangri-La hotelier.

Bungalows On The Bay, along Chenay Bay on St. Croix’s north shore, could be a dream-fulfilling purchase for the right hands-on business owner, developer, or investor willing to think outside the box.

The beachfront bar and restaurant features on-site timeshare and vacation rentals, plus acreage for potential additional cottages, hotel rooms, condominium development or single family homes. Longterm rentals could also be built on the site, adding year-round income and helping alleviate the Virgin Islands ongoing housing shortage.

With 50, one-bedroom, one-bathroom “island-style cottages” on the 28.75-acre property currently, owners are asking for $12.4 million, according to listing agents at Christie’s International Real Estate St Croix. There are also two half baths on property.

The white-sand beach comes with lounge chairs and umbrellas, as well as gazebo seating. There’s also a seaside freshwater pool.
