As winds and light rain from Tropical Storm Earl began on St. Thomas-St. John early Sunday, the V.I. Port Authority advised of several flight cancellations while the V.I. Water and Power Authority reported outages on St. Thomas and St. Croix.
The most recent weather update shows Tropical Storm Earl located roughly 85 miles northeast of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The storm was moving to the northwest at a speed of 3 mph and has maximum sustained wind speeds of 50 mph. Tropical-storm-force winds extend 105 miles from Earl, mainly to the north and east of its center.
So far, multiple airlines are reporting cancellations because of the weather. According to VIPA:
JetBlue: Only SJU JetBlue flights (JB1036 and JB1135) have canceled for the day. All other JetBlue cities operating.
Delta: All Flights Cancelled
American: All Flights Operating, however schedules may change as weather dictates (delays reported)
United Airlines: All Flights Cancelled
Spirit Airlines: Flights Operating, however schedules may change as weather dictates
Cape Air: All Flights Operating, however schedules may change as weather dictates
Seaplane: All Flights Operating, however schedules may change as weather dictates.
Please check with the airlines, as departure and arrival times may be delayed due to inclement weather.
Both local airports are open, and ferry services between St. John and St. Thomas are operating as normal.
Power alerts are being posted regularly on WAPA’s Facebook page. As of 11 a.m., several feeders were out on St. Thomas, with WAPA reporting only a portion of Feeder 8A restored. On St. Croix, so far, reported is a loss of service on Feeders 5A, 6A, and 9B. Residents on St. Croix have said there has so far been little weather related impact, but power has been out since 9 a.m.
