A former Virgin Islands resident was sentenced Thursday to 45 months and 17 days in prison for mailing firearms to St. Thomas, U.S. Attorney for the District of the Virgin Islands Gretchen C.F. Shappert reported.
In her news release, Shappert said Chief Judge Molloy also sentenced Baxter to three years supervised release and ordered him to pay $100 special assessment.
According to court documents, Steven Baxter, 36, then a resident of Orangeburg, South Carolina, used the United States Postal Service to mail two packages containing firearms to St. Thomas. A Customs and Border Protection canine discovered the first firearm during routine inspection of incoming mail to St. Thomas. Two days later, a United States Postal Inspection officer discovered the second firearm while sorting mail inside the post office.
The Department of Homeland Security Investigation investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Everard E. Potter prosecuted the case.
