The V.I. Department of Health will conduct free COVID-19 tests for St. John residents on Wednesday afternoons starting on Jan. 13.

Residents should bring their ID to the pop-up testing site at the gravel parking lot near the car ferry between 1:30 and 4:40 p.m. Testing will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

A group of St. John residents has been working to make testing more accessible to the public by assisting the team of medical practitioners who administer the tests.

When Cid Hamling went for testing a couple of weeks ago, she noticed that team members were hurriedly eating lunch out of take-out containers in the parking lot. She contacted a number of restaurants and several have offered to provide sit-down lunches for the nurses, she said.

The Sun Dog Café will provide lunch for the team on Jan. 13; North Shore Deli, 1864 The Restaurant and St. John Brewers have volunteered to feed the crew the following weeks.

“The island is just showing appreciation for what they do for us,” said Hamling. Businesses or restaurants that want to help can contact Hamling at cidhamling@gmail.com.
