This past weekend’s basketball tournament at Central High School, sponsored by Generation Next and Positive Guidance, reached a thrilling conclusion with Team TBK securing a hard-fought victory over Last Lost in the finals, winning a grand prize of $5,000.

The tournament, dubbed “STX Best of the Best,” featured seven local teams and was held on the evening of Thursday, Jan. 21. The gymnasium buzzed with excitement as players showcased their skills in a series of competitive matches. A large crowd of enthusiastic spectators provided a vibrant atmosphere, cheering on their favorite teams.

“Hosting a tournament that not only promotes athletic excellence but also offers a substantial reward has been an exhilarating experience,” said Jose Gonzalez, president of Positive Guidance. “We aimed to create a high-stakes environment where the spirit of competition and the joy of the game could coexist.”

Positive Guidance, a partner in organizing the event, emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and positive conduct throughout the tournament. Their efforts ensured that the high stakes did not overshadow the tournament’s core values of respect and teamwork.

The final game, a showdown between The Bank Killas (TBK) and Last Lost, was the highlight of the tournament. The stakes were high, and the anticipation in the gym was palpable as both teams vied for the $5,000 prize. The game was a thriller and, in the end, The Bank Killas (TBK) emerged victorious at 76-75, demonstrating exceptional skill and team coordination.
The award ceremony was not just a celebration of TBK’s victory but also a recognition of the talent and sportsmanship displayed by all participants.

“This $5,000 prize signifies more than just a monetary reward; it represents hard work, dedication and the spirit of community,” said Jed JohnHope, president of Generation Next, during the award ceremony.

The success and excitement of this tournament, particularly the buzz created by the substantial championship prize, have inspired talks of making it an annual event. Generation Next and Positive Guidance are keen to continue fostering community engagement and providing platforms for young athletes to shine.

As the community reflects on this successful event, the significant prize money for the championship game stands out as a highlight, underscoring the commitment of Generation Next and Positive Guidance to investing in youth and a better Virgin Islands.
