Gertrude Lucina Caines Dies at 82

With a profound sense of loss, the family of our beloved Gertrude Lucina “Cine” Clarke Caines, 82, of Old Tutu, St. Thomas announces her sudden passing on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Cine was born on the island of Nevis, West Indies, and migrated to St. Thomas in the 1960’s and was proud to call St.Thomas home for the last 50-plus years.  She was a spirited wife, mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, who left a legacy of love to all those who knew her.

Cine, a hardworking woman of faith, was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arnold Caines; parents James Henry Clarke and Euphena Augusta Daniel Clarke, of Nevis, W.I.; grandson Keithroy Caines, Jr.; great grandson, Tasheem Monsanto; brothers, Wilmot Theophilus Clarke and Mitchell McDonald Clarke; and sisters, Olive Lucina Clarke Wilkinson, Doris Clarke Belgrave, Melvina Clarke Bennette; and Ivy Oretha Clarke.

Cine is survived by her daughters, Sheila V. Clarke Hakim, and Jacklyn V. Clarke Edwards; sons, Junior Anthony Clarke, Merlin L. Clarke, Keithroy N. Caines, and Simon Kevin Caines; brothers Daniel Clarke Sr., Bernard St. Claire Clarke; sister, Cynthia Imelda Dodds; grandchildren, Latoya S. Edwards, Barika D. Hakim, Elijah Hakim Sr., Jenica S. Cine was a proud member of the Wesley Women’s League.

A celebration of life and homegoing service is scheduled on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Wesley Methodist Church in Estate Tutu.
