Gilda Larry Hurite Dies at 65

Gilda Larry Hurite

Gilda Larry Hurite of Pittsburgh, Penn. and St. Croix, USVI, died peacefully at her home in Fox Chapel with her family by her side, on May 17.

Gil was the cherished and loving wife of Dr. Francis G. Hurite, married for 65 years.  She was the adored mother of Lisa (Scott) Fischer of Greenwich, Conn., Jill (John) Doyle of Baltimore, Md., and Amy (Alan) Macdonald of Annapolis, Md.; the devoted and proud grandmother of Alexandra, Johnny, Sarah, Caroline, Catherine, Scatt, Kevin, Chris, Meghan and Ian; and the great-grandmother of Akela and Maeve, (all of whom referred to her as “Mimi”).

She was also the dear sister of the late Anita Richwine of Cincinnati, Ohio; and the daughter of the late Daniel and Olga (Colonna) Larry of Latrobe, Penn.

Born and raised in Latrobe, Penn., Gil obtained her nursing degree from Duquesne University and shortly thereafter married her high school sweetheart, Frank.  Gil and Frank settled in Pittsburgh to raise their three daughters. Over the years, Gil was an avid supporter of the arts and education in Pittsburgh, including the Pittsburgh Opera Guild, Botanical Garden of Western Pennsylvania and The Ellis School.  For years, she was an active member of the Twentieth Century Club and The Twenty-Five Club of Magee-Womens Hospital.  A long-time member of the Pittsburgh Field Club, Gil enjoyed years of tennis and paddle tennis with her numerous and dear friends.

Gil and Frank travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and Africa and found great joy hosting family and friends in their home on St Croix, USVI, returning each winter for over 50 years.   A gifted storyteller, with both timing and wit, Gil made friends easily and she dearly valued those connections.

A funeral Mass was held at Christ the King Parish, St. Scholastica Church, 309 Brilliant Ave., Aspinwall, on Friday, May 27.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Gil Hurite to Foundation Fighting Blindness, P.O. Box 45740, Baltimore, MD 21297-5740 or https://www.fightingblindness.org/.
