Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp joins American citizens throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands and across the globe on Sunday, Nov. 11, in honoring veterans of the United States Armed Forces – heroes who have sacrificed themselves to protect our freedom and way of life.
“It takes remarkable men and women to serve in the military. They must be selfless and strong, and able to lead or follow. They must be ready to respond at a moment’s notice,” said Gov. Mapp.
“We are honored to have hundreds of active and veteran service members among us here in the Virgin Islands.
“On the occasion of this 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the fighting in the First World War, I proclaim November 11, 2018, ‘Bells of Peace: A World War I Remembrance Day’ and invite all Virgin Islanders to join our fellow Americans in a nationwide tolling of bells at 11 a.m. as a traditional expression of reverence and remembrance used to honor the fallen.”
Mapp commended the V.I. Office of Veterans Affairs for organizing this year’s events in observance of Veterans Day and for recognizing the instructors of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC), who work tirelessly to instill values of citizenship, service and personal responsibility in young Virgin Islanders. Parades and formal ceremonies will take place on Saturday, both on St. Croix and St. Thomas.
In the United States, Veterans Day is usually observed on Nov. 11, which falls on a Sunday this year. Given that, Monday, Nov. 12, has been designated a federal holiday. In accordance with federal law, all federal and U.S. Virgin Islands government offices will be closed on this date in observance of Veterans Day.
