John Bradford Stout Dies at 70

John Bradford Stout passed quietly at his home after a short illness on Sunday, July 2. He was 70 years old and was born in New Orleans, La., to Arthur Wendel Stout Jr. and Rowena Lee Stout (deceased) of (Dade City, Fla.) and St. Croix.

He is survived by his sister, Miriam Stout Knorr (Nevis); brother, Arthur Wendel Stout III, (La.); nephews: Charles Anthony Golff Jr. (Fla.), Arthur Wendel Stout IV (La.), and Andrew Winston Stout (La.); niece, Rowena Lauren Knorr Gilbert (Fla.); grand nephews and nieces: Andre Gregory Gilbert (Fla.), Henry Stout (La.), Peter Stout (La.) and Benjamin Stout (La.); and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stout (La.).

Stout earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Westminster College (Mo.) and an MA in political science from the New School of Social Research (N.Y.).

He taught social studies for many years at St. Croix Central High School, St. Joseph’s High School. He served as a social science adjunct professor at the University of the Virgin Islands where he taught American History, World Civilization, Sociology and Philosophy. He was a member of the Society of Virgin Islands Historians. He had a great pride in teaching and enjoyed all his former students. He relished being called out from afar by students, “Stout” or “Mr. Stout.”

He was an avid reader, a collector of antiquarian books, photographs, documents and maps, an amateur astronomer and archaeologist, and a banana and pineapple cultivator. He loved to think of himself as a gentleman farmer like Thomas Jefferson, with many of the same interests.  He had a book on nearly every topic of the social sciences. He loved dogs and took care of 13 at the time of his death.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 14, at Kingshill Cemetery.
