Sen. Diane T. Capehart passed legislation on Monday that expedites $100,000 in funding for the Elderly Nutrition Program, or Meals on Wheels as it is more commonly known. Meals on Wheels delivers meals to seniors and the disabled at home. Our culture is proud of its deep respect for our elders. In the current fiscal year alone, the Meals on Wheels program has served more than 849,000 meals to 849 individuals.

Sen. Capehart states, “This is just the beginning. I vow to work on funding more quality, nutritious, well-planned meals,” as some residents have complained about the quality of food they receive.

With this bill, however, more than 77 individuals on St. Croix and 20 on St. Thomas will receive meals daily no later than Aug. 5. To address the staff and transportation needed to continue the program, Capehart states that she “will advocate for those funds in the 2025 budget.” Capehart thanks her colleagues for supporting the measure.
