Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement announcing $22.4 million in grant funding for the Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Terminal on St. Croix:

“I am tremendously pleased that the U.S.  Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded the Virgin Islands Port Authority a grant of $22.4 million for the reconstruction and modernization of the Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Terminal on St. Croix through DOT’s Port Infrastructure Development Program.

“The Virgin Islands, like other noncontiguous areas of the U.S., face unique challenges when it comes to infrastructure development and the importation of essential goods. This DOT award of $22.4 million promises significant assistance in overcoming these challenges. The importance of this award cannot be overstated. A well-functioning and modern port infrastructure is essential to ensure the smooth flow of goods, support our economy, and enhance the quality of life for our residents.

“The project to be funded by this award, designated as phases 1A and 1B, will encompass a range of critical improvements, including pile cap replacements, concrete pile repairs, concrete and steel deck repairs, mooring foundation repairs, bollard replacement and extensive pavement reconstruction in the container yard.

“These enhancements will not only increase the efficiency and capacity of the Wilfred “Bomba” Allick Terminal but also ensure its long-term sustainability.  The modernization of the terminal will have a positive ripple effect on our islands, boosting trade, creating jobs and ensuring a more resilient future for our community.

“The funding for this grant is made possible by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. This historic legislation reflects our commitment, under the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, to investing in our infrastructure, creating jobs and supporting the growth of communities across the United States, including the Virgin Islands. I am thankful for the continued support of DOT and the Maritime Administration for strengthening our port infrastructure.”

Congresswoman Plaskett also said, “I am proud of the work of the Virgin Island Port Authority and look forward to working with them to ensure the funds are fully utilized for a lasting, transformative impact on St. Croix and the Virgin Islands.”
