Man Allegedly Beats Grandmother Bloody

A St. Thomas man allegedly beat his grandmother bloody, fracturing bones in her face, then barricaded himself in his room, police said Friday.

The Wednesday afternoon incident in Anna’s Retreat ended when officers convinced Roquan Smith, 21, out of the room and arrested him without further trouble, police said. Smith declined to give police a statement.

A neighbor had heard commotion next door but nothing to suggest violence, police said. When the noise got louder, she went to the neighboring porch and heard a cry for help. She opened the door as the victim collapsed, covered in blood. Several 911 calls were unsuccessful. Another neighbor eventually got through to police.

The victim suffered injury to several facial bones, including a sinus fracture, had blood behind one of her eyes, swollen lips and nose, and cuts on the left side of her face. Police found a broken knife in the apartment and a bloodied T-shirt, according to court records.

Smith was charged with first and third-degree domestic violence, assault and battery, carrying a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence, criminal abuse of an elder adult, and disturbance of the peace.

He was scheduled for an initial court hearing Friday.
