A St. Croix man was arrested Thursday, Jan. 22, in connection with a shooting incident reported last week in Frederiksted, the Virgin Islands Police Department reported.
Police said the 911 Emergency Call Center received a Shot Spotter alert at about 9:22 p.m., indicating two rounds were fired on King Street. Officers later received a report of an assault at the same location, according to the police report.
According to police, detectives with the Criminal Investigation Bureau determined that the victim was standing outside a bar in Frederiksted when he encountered Omar Garcia, who appeared to be intoxicated. Police said a verbal dispute followed, during which Garcia allegedly pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the victim and threatened to kill him, the police report stated.
Police said the victim ran from the area. Garcia then allegedly pointed the firearm at another individual, who told officers he was able to escape and heard two gunshots fired behind him while fleeing.
A Superior Court judge signed arrest and search warrants for Garcia and his residence on Jan. 26, police said.
The warrants were executed Thursday by the Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Special Operations Bureau. Police said multiple firearms were recovered from Garcia’s residence, the release stated.
Garcia was charged with reckless endangerment first, assault third, carrying or using a firearm during a crime of violence, and discharging or aiming firearms, the release stated.
He was booked at the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station and remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending an advice of rights hearing, according to police.
