Michelle Smith Adds to Her V.I. Gold Medal Total

Michelle Smith’s tremendous performances won a Gold medal on the final day of the North American Central American and Caribbean Under 18 and Under 23 championships in the 800m, bringing her medal total to three, said the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation.

Smith set a new North American Central American and Caribbean Under 18 championship record and the second record set at the games with her 800m time of 2:09.90, according to the press release.

Smith also competed in the 100m Hurdles final and won a silver medal while running the 100m Hurdles setting a new Virgin Islands Junior record in 13.88, breaking her own record of 14.19. Sofia Swindell finished with a Bronze medal in the same race in a time of 14.01, which was also faster than the old Virgin Islands Junior record, the press release stated.

A couple of hours after her Bronze medal run, Swindell finished second in her 200m semi-final with a personal best of 24.53 and placed seventh overall in the 200m with a time of 26.64, the release stated.

Mikaela Smith won a bronze medal for her excellent performance in the U23 800m with a running time of 2:12.80, according to the release.

Akyra Joseph competed in the Heptathlon and finished fifth overall with a new personal best total of 3673 points. Her personal best in the Long Jump of 5.05m. In the Javelin Throw, she threw 18.18m and the 800m she completed in a time of 3:03.47, it said.      

Davina Browne competed in the Shot Put and finished fifth with a throw of 8.83m. The Virgin Islands won a total of 5 medals, coming in ninth out of 28 countries at the North American Central American and Caribbean Under 18 and Under 23 championships, the release stated.
