Michelle Smith Is Part of 20-Year-Old H.S. National Record-Breaking Performance

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team (VITFT) member Michelle Smith, a high school senior at Montverde Academy, competed in the Virginia Showcase 2024 in Virginia Beach, Va. on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13.

Smith helped her team in the 4 x 400m relay to a first-place finish and a new national high school record of 3:37.63. The Montverde Academy team broke a 20-year-old record previously held by Long Beach Poly High School out of California.

The team was led off by BVI’s Adaejah Hodge with a 54.10 split, followed by Michelle with 53.79, Alivia Williams with 54.75 and anchored by Skylar Williams with 55.00.

Smith also competed in the 500m, finishing 3rd with a season-best of 1:14.31, placing her third best in the nation.

Michelle Smith will compete next in the RADD Sunshine Showcase in Gainesville, Fla. on Jan. 20.

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Sofia Swindell, a junior at the Lawrenceville School, competed in the Hill vs Lawrenceville 2024 Indoor Track Meet on Jan. 13.

Swindell finished first in the final of the 55m with a new personal record of 7.24.

She was also part of her school’s 4 x 400m relay team. The team’s time of 3:50.79 ranks them No. 1 in the State of New Jersey.

Athletes competed in the third Virgin Islands Track and Field Team Developmental Meet on St. Croix on Jan. 11. They were competing in the U13, U17 and Open categories. The first Virgin Islands Track and Field Team Developmental Meet on St. Thomas on Jan. 13 did not have enough athletes in attendance to contest any events.
