St. Croix’s Michelle Smith won the gold medal in the 400m Hurdles run. Smith ran the 400m Hurdles final in a time of 56.99, setting a new North American Central American and Caribbean Under 18 championship record on the first day of competition. The previous record was held by Alliah Baker from Jamaica with a time of 1:03.36, the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced Saturday.
“Breaking the NACAC record is a dream come true, and I am immensely grateful for the support I’ve received from my team and my country,” said Smith in a press release from Sen. Angel Bolques. “This victory motivates me to continue pushing my boundaries and representing the U.S. Virgin Islands with pride,” she said.
“Our athletes continue to showcase incredible talent and determination. We have another example that this territory is producing elite, world-class young people. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments and remain poised to witness more history being made,” Bolques exclaimed.
On Sunday, Smith is running in the 800m U18 final at 9 a.m.
