Motorcyclist Dies After Collision with Jeep on St. Croix

A motorcycle rider is dead following a collision with a Jeep on Tuesday evening on St. Croix, the V.I. Police Department reported.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the collision occurred around 7:06 p.m. on Queen Mary Highway at the intersection north of Kmart West, police said.

The driver of a Jeep Wrangler Sahara was exiting the Kmart parking lot and turning into the eastbound lane when the operator of the Suzuki GSX motorcycle, who was heading west, struck the front right fender of the Jeep, police said.

The motorcycle rider fell into the roadway of the intersection while his bike skidded approximately 197 feet along the westbound lane, according to the report.

The rider, identified as Zioney Ruiz, 23, was taken to the Juan F. Luis Hospital via ambulance for medical treatment but died of his injuries at 9:57 p.m. Tuesday, the report stated. The attending Emergency Room physician said his death was a result of blunt force trauma to the body and head. His family was with him, police said.

The driver of the Jeep and a passenger in their vehicle did not sustain any injuries, police said.
