Nelarine N. Sackey, also known as “Nella,” of Estate LaGrange, died on Aug. 13. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by her daughters: Helen L. Sackey-Phillips and Yvonne L. Payne; sons: Clairmont A. Sackey and Raymond A. Sackey; granddaughters: Reevah S. Phillips, Shareese D. Castillo, A-Shana Sackey, Ra-Shayla Sackey, A-Shayla Sackey, J’Vanna Sackey and Ronna Sackey; grandsons: Marlon Tyson and Elijah Sackey; 20 great-grandchildren; adopted sister, Carmen Bastian; and brother, Selassie A. Newton.
She is also survived by nieces: Mona L. Pickering-McGriff, Moureen L. Pickering, Marva L. Pickering-Jones, Raynell Newton-Smith, Carolyn Newton, Cydonie Francis and Cheron Francis; nephews: Marvin L. Pickering, Melvin L. Pickering, Roy Newton, Toulouse L. Gordon, Michael Newton and Milton Newton; 15 great nieces; 10 great nephews; sons-in-law: Vincent M. Phillips (Mr. Courtesy) and Leslie Payne; and godchildren: Midre A. Cummings, Jamie Johnson-Mitchell, Akeem Ferdinand, Ahmad Williams and Khayla Bastian.
Other survivors include special friends: Leona “Audrey” Johnson, Emma Armstrong, Beverly Smith, Enid Gustave, Glenda Mathurin Lee, Marilyn Martin and sister Rena, Jozette Matthew, Renee Counts, Freida Odom, Charles and Anita Nibbs, and Mable Marcus; special cousins: Clarissa Messer Petersen, Urylee Burke and Merilyn Daniel; as well as other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Friedensberg Moravian Church, Frederiksted, St. Croix. Tributes will begin at 9 a.m. with a service at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Frederiksted Cemetery.
