The short special meeting for the Cannabis Advisory Board began with an immediate executive session on Tuesday as members convened to select a new director and share updates on the rules and regulations in order to conform with the Virgin Islands Cannabis Use Act.

Members present were Dr. Gary Jett, Nicole Simms, Christopher Jones, Positive Nelson, Richard Evangelista, Dr. Catherine Kean, Chris Jones, and Natalie Hodge (a non-voting member).

“As we are all aware, the previous executive director Hannah Carty resigned on March the 8th. Prior to that, approximately on February 16th, we had on our webpage the position for the executive director, and we received a number of applications,” said Chairwoman Kean.

In advance of the meeting, the board reviewed the applications and conducted an interview session. After a second executive session on Tuesday, the board discussed their findings for the director position.

“It pleases me to let the public know that we have selected someone to serve as our new executive director for the Office of Cannabis Regulations,” said Kean. “However, prior to revealing the person’s identity, we have to confirm the individual’s availability and conduct a background check. So that will be forthcoming.”

The board also highlighted the proposed rules and regulations for the Virgin Islands Cannabis Use Act of 2023, which was published on Feb. 16 for public review. Next Monday is the last day to submit comments on the proposal, as there is a 30-day window. The proposal can be viewed here. The board urges the public to review the document and provide feedback.
