A short but spunky parade, pan music in the air, and stylish vehicles everywhere brought out Labor Day Festival fans and on Monday. Families and neighbors mingled throughout the day, joined by car show enthusiasts, many of whom came from St. Thomas.
The crowds that assembled seemed happy to spend the day browsing an array of cars, jeeps, audio systems, motorcycles, Volkswagon bugs, and custom roadsters. Promoters Al Smith and Jay Swartley said this year’s attendance was one of their best.
After spending the morning on the car barge, followed by a road trip to the venue, the food stand looked inviting.
Community groups joined the holiday spirit. Young mariners from Kids and the Sea came to let everyone know the learn-to-sail program was making a comeback. St. John’s own Love City Pan Dragons brightened the day with their tunes.
The model car tracks saw lots of traffic from children, sending tiny Hot Wheels down the slides. For those still young at heart, a customized, motorized version of the Big Wheel sat on the field.
By late afternoon, the judges had completed their rounds, announcing car show winners for various categories.
Then it was time for the eight-mile ride to town to make the barge connection back home.
