Rays Win Both Games in St. Thomas/St. John IAA Basketball Championships

The St. Thomas/St. John Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship Series continued on Wednesday afternoon at the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School Gymnasium.

Junior Varsity Boys – Game 2 – Ivanna Eudora Kean 40 – Charlotte Amalie 34
The “D” Rays of Ivanna Eudora Kean High School finished the 2021-2022 St. Thomas/St. John IAA Junior Varsity Boys Season with an unblemished record with their 40 – 34 win on Wednesday in Game 2 of their Championship Series against Charlotte Amalie High School. This was an up-tempo game with both teams leaving everything they had on the court. Ajai Larcheveaux hit two big three-point shots in the fourth quarter that proved to be the margin of victory for Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. Top scorers for the Rays were Zavier Powell and Dale Brathwaite with 11 points each. Jaden Dowe and Kibwe Belle led the Chicken Hawks with 9 and 8 points respectively. The win makes Ivanna Eudora Kean High School champions of St. Thomas/St. John IAA Junior Varsity Boys Division.

Varsity Boys – Game 1 – Ivanna Eudora Kean 64 – Antilles School 57
The St. Thomas/St. John IAA Championship Series in the varsity boys division started on Wednesday evening. Among all the sounds filling the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School gymnasium, the one heard the most was the official’s whistles. The Ivanna Eudora Kean High School committed 20 fouls in the first half, but the Hurricanes were unable to make the most of the Rays over aggressiveness missing 14 free throws during that time. In the third quarter, Vern Frett, of the “D” Rays, took matters into his own hands as he scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in that frame. The Hurricanes kept the game close in the fourth quarter but could never get over the hump. Ivanna Eudora Kean won the first game in this best-of-three championship series 64-57. The Rays were led by Frett with 17 points and three steals. Jayden Dixie and Guyma Phebe added 11 points each for Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. Dixie also snagged a game-high 11 rebounds. The Hurricanes were led by Trevor Prince 19 points and 4 steals. Teammate Onyx Reid scored 15 points and collected 9 rebounds. Game 2 of this Championship Series will be played on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the Mark C Marin Center at Antilles School.
