Results Are Great for Virgin Islanders Running in Cross Country on Mainland

Michelle Smith Michelle Smith, a high school sophomore at Montverde Academy, ran a personal record of 19:20 in 3.1 mile at the FSU Pre-State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., on Oct. 16. She placed 4th overall in the Select Girls section out of a field of 232 athletes. Her team finished 19th in the team standing.

She followed that performance by taking 1st place in her league championship with a time of 19:30 for the 3.1-mile race. The Citrus League Championship was held on Oct. 20 in Winter Park, Fla. Montverde Academy finish 3rd in the team standing.

Michelle’s next competition will be the District Championship on October 30 in Spring Hill, Fla.

Mikaela Smith, a senior at Austin Peay State University, ran in the Golden Eagle Invitational in Cookesville, Tenn., in the 3.1 Mile. Mikaela finished the distance in 19:49 to finish 14th, which was 3 seconds of her personal best. Smith was second on her team and helped her team to a 6th place team standing.

She will be running next in the OVC Conference Championship in Nashville, Tenn., on Oct. 30.

Rachel Conhoff, a Ursinus College junior, competed in the Inter-Regional Border Battle in Glassboro, N.J., on Oct. 16. He ran the 6K race in 23:26, finishing 34th place overall out of 275 runners. Conhoff finished 1st for her Ursinus team and helped them to a 19th place team standing.

She will compete next in the Centennial Conference Championship on Oct. 30.

Jah Whyte, a junior at Maumelle High School, competed in his conference championship on Oct. 26. Whyte finished 5th overall in the River City Championship in Little Rock, while running the 5K distance in 17:14.

Jah Whyte will be competing next on Nov. 5 in the Arkansas District Championship for Cross Country in Hot Springs, Ark.

The Virgin Island’s Cross-Country Season on St. Croix will start on Wednesday, Oct. 27. VI Paving and the Department of Agriculture assisted the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation (VITFF) with the creation of a new cross-country course in Negro Bay where the races will be held.
