Seaman Apprentice Jasonique Roberts, a sailor from St. Thomas, assigned to USS Michael Murphy and has been recognized as “Murph of the Week,” the U.S. Navy Office announced.

Roberts graduated from Robert M. Shoemaker High School in 2022 and joined the Navy one year ago.

“I joined the Navy to travel the world,” she said. “Also, to become a better person and build a foundation for myself, to help my family in the long run and take care of those who took care of me.”

“I also joined because my aunt has always wanted to be in the military and never had the chance to. She is one of the reasons that I’m here today,” Roberts added.

Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America, the press release stated.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

Roberts has had many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during her military service, the release stated.

“I received this award because I decided to step out of my comfort zone and lead a position that I have never done before,” said Roberts. “With the help of my team and shipmates, I brought over a line, shot from one ship to the other, all on my own and seated our fuel probe on the first try.”

Roberts can take pride in serving America through military service, the release stated.

“Being ‘Murph of the Week’ means that my hard work and dedication did not go unseen,” said Roberts. “Just stepping up to the plate and doing things out of your comfort zone can be beneficial for you and others as well. This motivates others to step up and follow in your positive footsteps.”

The USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG 112) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The ship is named after LT Michael P. Murphy, a SEAL who selflessly gave his life for his shipmates during a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan as a part of Operation Red Wings. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions and his legacy lives on with USS MICHAEL MURPHY and her crew of 337 sailors and officers, according to the press release.
