In a 10-hour Legislature session Tuesday, the Senate, between veto votes and passing dramatic bills, approved three zoning changes and four measures honoring residents.
Senators sent the governor an act granting a zoning variance for offices, event space, building rentals, solar and wind energy development, and short-term housing at the Great House at No. 10 Estate Grange, Company Quarter. This property is where Alexander Hamilton’s mother is purported to be buried.
Senators also unanimously approved rezoning for Plot No. 246 Estate Glynn, Queen Quarter, to allow for the construction and operation of a guesthouse.
Another rezoning that received unanimous support from the 15 senators attending the session was for Plot Nos. 19 and 20 Prince Street, Frederiksted.
The individuals the senators are asking the governor to approve honors for are Dr. Ralph deChabert, Dr. Alfred Heath, Police Lt. Melbourne Clarke, and Cpl. Kendall Emanuel George.
deChabert would be honored for his contributions to the medical field and his many civic contributions to the community. The Labor and Delivery/Post Partum Unit “Maternity Services” at the Juan F. Luis Hospital would be named after him.
Cpl. George would be recognized for serving as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Vietnam War and making the ultimate sacrifice. Route 107 from Coral Bay to Lameshur Bay, St. John, would be named “Kendall Emanuel George Drive.”
Senate legislation also asks that the V.I. Council on the Arts be directed to construct and erect a bronze bust of Dr. Alfred Heath next to those of Edith L. Williams, J. Antonio Jarvis, and Rothschild Francis in Education Park on St. Thomas.
Police Lt. Melbourne Clarke should be honored, according to the senators, for his dedication, service, and contributions to the community in law enforcement by adding the name “Police Lt. Melbourne Clarke Drive” at Route 669 on the island of St. Croix.
