Sidney Elwallis Freeman Dies at 87

It is with heavy hearts, that the Family and friends announce the transition of Mr. Sidney Elwallis Freeman, who graced this world on August 22, 1937 in Tortola, BVI, and passed away peacefully on Feb. 7, 2025 in St. Thomas, USVI at the age of 87.

He was preceded in death by his Parents: Samuel Isaac “Gordy” Freeman and Mary Elizabeth Turnbull-Freeman, Brothers: James, Samuel, Allan, and Carl Freeman, Sisters: Manuelita Freeman-Adams, Emma Freeman-Christopher, Estelle Freeman-Hodge, Eurina Freeman-Scatliffe, Evelyn Freeman-Fahie, Manda, Lillian, Hilda, and Elaine Freeman.

Sidney, also affectionately known as “Pedro”, “Boss”, “Sid”, “Sido”, is survived by his wife, Grethel Thomas-Freeman, Daughters: Linda D. Freeman and Lorna L. Freeman-Woodley; Sons: Lester E. Freeman and Linroy E. Freeman; Daughter-In-Law: Tessa N. DeSilva-Freeman; Son-In-Law: Kerwin D. Woodley: Sister: Edna Freeman-Hodge; Brothers-In-Law: Carlton, Noel, and Roosevelt Thomas;  Sister-In-Law: Emma Thomas-Hodge; 

Nieces: Lillian Freeman-Dawson, Bernice Adams-Gumbs, Marianne Freeman-Boykins, Sylvia Adjepong, Lydia Hodge-Christian, Lorraine Fahie-Brooks, Imean Fahie, Phyllis Freeman, Dagmar Greenaway, Imogene Hodge-Ottley, Daphne Hodge, Linette Hodge-Sawyer, Cheryl Hodge, and Jacklin Hodge-Rogers; Nephews: Larry, Elridge, Edwin, and Ulric Adams, Kenneth Freeman, Ifield, Whitfield, and Garfield “Shabazz” Hodge, Ira Scatliffe, Lowell Fahie, Dale Williams, Dean Greenaway, and Vernon Hodge; 

God Children: Herline Thomas-Brown; Ishma Edwards, Whitfield Hodge, Shorn Jones, Marjorie Dawson-Lettsome, Imogene Hodge-Ottley, Ishma Rhymer, Germarie Smith, Beverly Todman, Suzette Turnbull;

Special Cousins: Rudolph Freeman, Ulric Scatliffe, Alfred Farrington, Bishop Kenneth Benjamin, Sr., Elaine Freeman, Joyce Petersen, Willis Fahie, Rosalia Payne, Sezille Callwood; 

Many other Great, Great-Great Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins, too numerous to mention;

Mr. Freeman moved to St. Thomas, USVI in the early 1960s and his career path included significant contributions as an Architect, Builder, Contractor, Educator, and Local Preacher, among many other notable milestones and accomplishments.  During  the 70s, Mr. Freeman worked under contractor, Tom Qualey (TQ Construction Company) in Puerto Rico and St. Thomas (STT). Alongside Tom Qualey, Mr. Freeman aided the construction of several renown, STT building structures, including: Woolworth (now K-Mart: Lockhart Gardens), Original Ramada Hotel @ Yacht Haven, Bovoni Public Housing Project, Reichold Center for the Arts, WAPA STT Plant, Methodist Manse for Pastors/Superintendents in Tortola, and numerous personal family residences and estates.  Mr. Freeman also served for several years within the USVI Government via the Department of Education including lastly at CAHS where he taught Woodwork and Drafting until his retirement in 2012.  

Mr. Freeman dutifully served the Methodist Church – STT/STJ Circuit for over 50 Years in multiple organizations and capacities, including, but not limited to, Christchurch Jubilaires, Men’s Fellowship, Wesley Senior 11:00 am Choir, Wesley Brothers (Co-founder), Melody Makers Steel Orchestra (Co-Founder), Sunday School Teacher, Class Leader, Synod Representative, and Accredited Local Preacher.

Mr. Freeman was a spiritual man of peace and will be greatly missed.  May his soul rest in eternal peace.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his home going service on Friday, March 7th, 2025 at Wesley Methodist Church – St. Thomas, VI. Viewing will begin at 8:30 a.m. with service to follow at 10 a.m.  Internment: Eastern Cemetery – Smith Bay. The Family is requesting traditional mourning colors.
