A man was arrested on St. Croix Wednesday after a building was set on fire with some of the occupants inside, the V.I. Police Department reported.

A person called 911 reporting that 26-year-old Luis M. Felix Santos, aka Bebo, was damaging items inside the old Paradise Gym, police said. A third call from the victim was a request for the fire department to be dispatched because “Bebo” was setting the building on fire, according to the report.

Detectives made contact with two victims who reported that at about 10 p.m., while inside their living quarters inside the old Paradise Gym, Santos came shouting and banging on the doors to their rooms. They also reported that Santos went to the northern side of their rooms, lit two large fires, and shouted, “I gon kill ah yo mudascunt,” police said. The two said they could not breathe while inside their rooms and that Santos then started another larger fire in front of their rooms, the report stated.

The pair told police they were able to escape through a rear opening inside their rooms. Officers said Santos standing in front of the building and told them that he was trying to cook something. He was detained, and the victims were able to identify Santos as the individual who set the building on fire, the report stated. The fire department extinguished the fire.

Santos was arrested and charged with attempted murder, arson and destruction of property. He declined to give a statement. His bail was set at $100,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing scheduled for Friday, police said.
