St. Croix Man Dies After Crashing Vehicle into a Fence and Tree

A St. Croix man with a medical condition lost control of his vehicle Monday and crashed into a fence and a tree, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The 911 Emergency Call Center notified VIPD at approximately 5:33 p.m. Monday to investigate a one-vehicle automobile collision that occurred on the shoulder of the northbound lane near Estate Clifton Hill in the vicinity of the solar panels (Route 663), according to the police report.

When officers arrived at the scene, they observed the body of a man, later identified as 85-year-old Kenneth A. Andrews, lying on the ground approximately 70 feet east of the collision, the police report stated.

A preliminary investigation along with evidence at the scene revealed that Andrews left the Diageo area and was driving north through the intersection when a medical emergency occurred. The evidence further indicates that Andrews, due to a critical medical emergency, lost control of his vehicle and collided into a fence and a tree located on the shoulder of the northbound lane at a residence in Estate Profit, according to the police report.

Approximately three men who were in the area quickly responded and removed Andrews from his vehicle and placed him in an open grassy area so he could receive medical treatment, the report stated.

The officers’ primary conclusion is that a medical condition contributed to Andrews losing control of his vehicle, hence colliding into the fence and tree. Though there was no evidence to indicate that Andrews sustained any injuries due to the collision, he passed away, police said.

This case remains open and under investigation by the Virgin Islands Police Department Traffic Investigation Bureau, St. Croix District.
