A man on St. Thomas turned himself in Sunday after fleeing on foot from police officers, the V.I. Police Department said Monday.
A vehicle was stopped on Turpentine Run Road Saturday for a traffic infraction. Officers smelled an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and searched the vehicle. During the search, a firearm was discovered, and officers asked the driver of the vehicle if he had a license for the firearm. The unknown male took off and fled on foot towards Banco Popular and then headed toward the Caribbean Auto Mart dealership, where he scaled a fence and ran into the thick brush, evading officers. Officers processed the vehicle and unlicensed firearm, according to the police report.
Chamaal K. Weekes, 35, turned himself over to police custody at the Richard N. Callwood Command. Weekes is charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm within a thousand feet of a school, unlawful entry, interfering with an officer discharging his duties, and escape from custody of an officer, the report stated.
Weekes’ bail was set at $50,000, and he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of rights hearing.
