State Office of Special Education Seeks Mediators, Impartial Hearing Officers

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s State Office of Special Education (SOSE) has an immediate need of mediators and impartial hearing officers in both the St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John districts.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its implementing regulations mandate that states make available formal processes that will allow for families (who have children with disabilities, age 3-21) and public schools to resolve special education-related disputes.

Applicants should have the following qualifications:
1) Possess knowledge of and the ability to understand the provisions of federal and state regulations pertaining to the Individuals with Disabilities Act
2) Cannot be an employee of the State Education Agency or the local education agency that is involved in the education of the child
3) Cannot be a person having a personal or professional interest that conflicts with the person’s objectivity in the hearing
