7 a.m. Friday Update:
Due to heavy rain that led to flooding overnight Thursday, five schools in the St. Croix District will have a delayed start on Friday, the V.I. Education Department announced.
The following schools will open at 9 a.m., with school bus pick-up starting at 8 a.m.:
- St. Croix Central High School
- St. Croix Educational Complex High School
- St. Croix Career and Technical Education Center
- Claude O. Markoe Elementary School
- Lew Muckle Elementary School
All other schools in the St. Croix District will open at their normal times and bus pick-up will be at the normal times, the department announced.
All schools in the St. Thomas-St. John District will open at their normal times and bus pick-up will be at the normal times. Addelita Cancryn Intermediate and Jr. High School will revert to virtual learning, as previously announced, the department stated.
5:54 a.m. Friday:
The start of school will be delayed Friday for students on St. Croix due to heavy rain that led to flooding overnight Thursday, the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency announced via a text alert early Friday.
“Due to inclement weather/flooding last night, the Department of Education will advise the St. Croix District of the report time for schools by 6:30 a.m. Anticipate delayed opening,” the statement, issued just after 5:30 a.m., said.
The alert said that Education staff are currently assessing each school and that students and their parents and guardians should stand by for updates.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for St. Croix just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday as severe weather impacted the area.
Schools on St. Thomas were not affected and will open at the usual time, according to VITEMA.
