Two babies, one on St. Thomas and one on St. Croix, were the U.S. Virgin Island’s first babies of the year 2020.

A boy, Malachi White, was born at the Schneider Regional Medical Center. Details were not available from the hospital Thursday, but the V.I. Daily News gave his time of birth at 12:37 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Less than an hour later, Ciara Anyla Carmona, a seven pound, four ounce baby girl, was born at 1:26 a.m. Wednesday by Dr. Anne Treasure at the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, according to the hospital’s legal counsel, Chivonne Thomas.

Ciara’s mother Lia Carmona, was given a matching car seat and stroller and diapers constructed to look like a cake, known as “a diaper cake,” by the hospital, Thomas said. Ciara also received a silver bracelet by LuvKids Television and Radio Productions Inc., Thomas said.

Thomas said the mother had a caesarean section in the wee morning hours but carried Ciara full term and had an expected due date of Jan. 1, 2020.

“She was right on time,” Thomas said.

Ciara was born into a sizable family and has seven siblings. Thomas said the baby girl has six sisters and one brother to keep her company. Both the mother and baby will be released from the hospital Friday.
