The Vibery, Red Hook’s innovative non-alcoholic social bar and community hub, is set to debut an evocative new monthly event series Friday at 7 p.m. “Voices of the Diaspora,” an open mic night launching in honor of Black History Month, aims to create a dedicated platform for the powerful artistry living within the local community, from singers and poets to drummers, storytellers, and emcees of every kind.

The concept of the event emerged from a natural synergy between The Vibery’s mission and the vision of local musician, Ital. According to event coordinator Aisha-Zakiya Boyd, the team had been floating the idea of an open mic night for some time. It was after collaborating with Ital at the space’s anniversary celebration that the concept crystallized.

Ital expressed a desire to promote and host a recurring open mic, seeing it as a vital tool for cultural preservation. For him, an open mic is a sacred exchange. “That’s where people could come and express their positive thoughts, feelings, ideas, and expressions; all this helps keep the culture alive. Yes! Ase!” says Ital. The timing of the launch during Black History Month was a perfect fit, as Boyd describes Ital as an “avid culture bearer, historian, and resource for our community.”

The event is intentionally curated to infuse the space with creative expression meant to move and inspire. Bringing together a collective of musicians, poets, and storytellers allows The Vibery to honor the full spectrum of diasporic identity. As a Caribbean community facing uncertain times, Boyd notes that these weekly and monthly gatherings are designed to offer a reprieve. “We see the anxiety that plagues many of us daily. We hope that our events give people a respite in the storm, a place to rest and reset,” said Boyd. With this event, the goal is to offer a safe space supported by community, where people can express what is on their hearts and minds.

While “Voices of the Diaspora” is being launched during Black History Month, organizers stress that all people are welcome. The intention is to create a space for dialogue, compassion, introspection, and fun.

This initiative aligns seamlessly with The Vibery’s overarching mission to provide a non-alcoholic social environment in Red Hook, a place where fun, connection, and “medicine in play” are the primary offerings. Looking ahead, The Vibery anticipates making “Voices of the Diaspora” a monthly event, providing an ongoing opportunity for community members to come out and share their talents.

The event is free and open to the public. Community members interested in performing can sign up at the venue. For more information, visit thevibery.odoo.com or call (340) 693-0420.
