During a routine traffic stop, an illegal handgun, including live rounds of ammunition was found inside a St. Croix man’s vehicle, the V.I. Police Department reported.
On Thursday, at 1:54 p.m., a K9 officer observed a vehicle overtaking another vehicle on a double solid yellow line while on mobile patrol on the Queen Mary Highway near the New Breed Farm. A traffic stop was conducted for the traffic violation, according to the police report.
While addressing the driver, the officer smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the inside of the vehicle and observed several burnt marijuana cigarettes in the vehicle’s ashtray. A search of the vehicle was conducted, which led to the discovery of a handgun with an extended magazine with live rounds inside a brown and black Coach bag located on the driver’s seat, the police report stated.
The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, Darius George, Jr., 25, was detained and subsequently placed under arrest for carrying of a firearm openly or concealed and possession of ammunition. His bail was set at $50,000, the report stated.
