Two Crime Scenes, Two Gunshot Victims, 25th Homicide

Two St. Croix men were victims of gunshots Saturday, leaving one man dead and another man injured, the V.I. Police Department reported.

On Saturday, around 11:54 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received notification from ShotSpotter of shots being fired in the Golden Rock area on St. Croix at G-Max Service Station and then received calls regarding a gunshot victim at the service station, according to the police report.

When officers arrived on scene, they found the body of a Black man who appeared to be unresponsive. He was checked by an Emergency Medical Technician who found no signs of life. The victim appeared to have succumbed to gunshot wounds about his body, the police report stated.

The deceased was identified by next of kin as Steadroy James.

James’ death marks St. Croix’s 12th homicide of the year and brings the territory’s total to 25 since the start of 2023, according to the Source Homicide List.*

While additional units were responding to the incident at G-Max Service Station, officers were notified that there was a gunshot victim at John F. Kennedy Housing Community. Units responded and secured the location and discovered a firearm on scene. The victim was shot in the stomach and arm and was taken to Juan F. Luis Hospital by ambulance.

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2023 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing, which the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
