USVI Women’s Basketball Team Reaches Playoffs as Youth Baseball Teams Compete in Regional Tournaments

The United States Virgin Islands presently has a senior women’s basketball team and two youth baseball teams representing the territory at international events.

The USVI women’s basketball team is seeking its second consecutive gold medal at the 2026 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup Centrobasket Qualifiers in Managua, Nicaragua.

The Virgin Islands opened play against rival Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico took control early and carried a 45-34 lead into halftime. The USVI mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter but fell 81-75. Anisha George led the Virgin Islands with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

The USVI rebounded with two impressive victories. J-Naya Ephraim scored 17 points in the Virgin Islands’ 84-47 win over El Salvador, while Taylor Jones was the top scorer in the USVI’s 87-71 victory over Guyana.

The Virgin Islands finished second in Group B and will face the third-place finisher from Group A in the playoffs Thursday.

The USVI also is one of seven teams competing in the 2026 Little League Baseball Caribbean Region Tournament in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico.

The 12-and-under team endured a tough campaign. In its opening game, the Virgin Islands held a healthy lead going into the bottom of the final inning before the Bahamas mounted a comeback to hand the USVI a 7-6 loss.

In its second game against host Sabana Grande, the USVI played well, but several close calls went against the team. Sabana Grande earned a 10-8 victory.

After a day of rest, the Virgin Islands played a doubleheader Monday. The USVI lost to Aruba 11-6 and the Dominican Republic 14-1.

The Virgin Islands responded with a 14-7 victory over Puerto Rico before ending the tournament with an 11-7 loss to Bonaire.

The Junior League Baseball Latin American Region Tournament is taking place in Phillipsburg, St. Maarten.

The Virgin Islands has played two games with less-than-favorable results. The USVI dropped a 6-5 decision to Bonaire in its opening game before falling 10-7 to Panama.

The Virgin Islands has two pool-play games remaining against Aruba and Nicaragua.
