A number of cooks left in grand celebration following the University of the Virgin Islands’ 29th Annual Afternoon on the Green. The event was held on Sunday, March 24, on the Herman E. Moore Golf Course, St. Thomas Campus. Awards were presented to several cooks whose donated dishes were adjudged first, second or third in various categories.
Afternoon on the Green co-chairs Kyza A. Callwood and Loretta Lloyd thanks the community for coming out to the support UVI’s annual “friendraiser” and also thanks the volunteers for their assistance.
“Afternoon on the Green could not have been as successful as it was without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and the delectable dishes prepared by the cooks,” said Callwood. “We are thankful that members of the community see the value in supporting such an important event that benefits a very worthy cause.”
Approximately 80 cooks donated some 120 dishes to this year’s Afternoon on the Green.
Cora Thomas-Cranston received the “Overall People’s Choice” award after getting the most paper ballot and text votes. She prepared assorted cup tarts and won a Samsung tablet, compliments of AT&T.

“Our goal was to reinvigorate the spirit of Afternoon on the Green this year,” said Mitchell Neaves, vice-president for institutional advancement at UVI. “The planning committee did an outstanding job working collectively the past few months and the outcome of their efforts produced one of our must successful undertakings in the history of the event.”
Afternoon on the Green co-chair Loretta Lloyd thanked all of the sponsors of the event for their support. “The support of the corporate community plays a tremendous role in making Afternoon on the Green the success it was,” Lloyd said. “This year we witnessed an eagerness for Afternoon, as was demonstrated by the number of entities that came on board this year.”

The proceeds of Afternoon on the Green go toward supporting the Edward E. Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Awards. Two Ivan Eudora Kean High School seniors were named as beneficiaries of this scholarship at the event. Shania Farrington will pursue her undergraduate studies in Hospitality and Tourism and Alana Urena will pursue her undergraduate studies in Business Accounting. Both students will commence their studies at UVI in the fall semester of 2019.
